Madelyn Fernstrom

Madelyn Fernstrom, Ph.D., CNS is a Professor of Psychiatry, Epidemiology and Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Fernstrom is also a board certified Nutrition Specialist from the American College of Nutrition, and is the founding director of the UPMC Weight Management Center.

A New York native, Dr. Fernstrom earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Boston University and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she studied nutritional biochemistry, metabolism, and neuropharmacology. She served a fellowship in endocrinology and behavior at the Harvard Medical School and joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1982.

A nationally recognized expert in the field of nutrition, weight control, and wellness. Dr. Fernstrom is an established media resource. She is the Diet and Nutrition Editor for NBC's Today Show, with regular highly popular segments on nutrition, weight loss, diet trends and healthful eating. Dr. Fernstrom is also the Health Editor-at-Large for iVillage.com and writes a blog entitled "Health Journal". She has also appeared on NBC Nightly News, Fox News, the BBC, National Public Radio, and has been a guest on 20/20, Dr. Phil, and Good Morning America. Dr. Fernstrom is the Health Editor for PITTSBURGH Magazine, and also serves on the national advisory board for Fitness Magazine.

Dr. Fernstrom is interviewed regularly for newspapers including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and LA Times, and has been featured in magazines including Readers Digest, Business Week, Good Housekeeping, Glamour, Allure, Fitness, Self, Cosmopolitan, and Prevention.

She is the author of the new book The Real You Diet and The Runner's Diet (Rodale Press; one of the first popular books to combine an eating plan and regular physical activity in a single volume) published in 2005.
